Project:
"Imaging magnetic microstructure in the central nervous system non-invasively"

Funded with:
DKK 6,179,836

About the project:

Disintegration of myelin and accumulation of iron is a common observation in many neurodegenerative diseases, and an accurate imaging method for mapping its distribution in-vivo could therefore provide an important window into the evolution of brain diseases. MRI potentially offers such an opportunity through the influence of myelin and iron magnetic properties on the phase and magnitude of MRI signals. However, the current approach, Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping, completely ignores structure of magnetic susceptibility distributions on the micrometer level (“magnetic microstructure”), which is known to impact the signal substantially. We will develop a theory to describe these effects, test it with realistic simulations, and perform comprehensive experimental validation with comparison to histology. Finally, we will explore how faithfully the method can be translated to an in-vivo setting using a tiltable head coil at the Connectom.

CONGRATULATIONS !
