Title: Isolating neural correlates of conscious perception

    ABSTRACT:

In the neuroscience of consciousness, a fundamental goal is to identify and isolate potential neural correlates of conscious perception (NCCs) from closely related sensory and cognitive processes that are either not necessary or not sufficient for conscious experience. While there are now many possible ways to manipulate conscious perception of sensory stimuli and to measure differential brain activity between stimuli that were perceived vs. not-perceived, it has been challenging to isolate NCCs from pre- and post-perceptual processes (e.g., expectations, attention, memory, decision-making, reporting). This talk will review recent attempts in my lab to isolate NCCs by using bistable perception, inattentional blindness, and masking paradigms. EEG data from these experiments have begun to challenge and help refine leading theories of consciousness, such as global neuronal workspace theory and recurrent processing theory.
