I am a Professor at the Centre of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN, Department of Clinical Medicence, Aarhus University). I have a university degree in neurophysiology, a PhD in psychology/cognitive neuroscience and over 30 years of experience in neuroscientific research.

Time in the brain’s language: Spatio-temporal configuration of neurolinguistic  circuits in health and disease

 In the research work of mine and my colleagues, we explore the dynamic processes of storage and access of linguistic representations in the brain, specifically:

• Neural memory circuits for words, their functional properties and spatio-temporal dynamics of their activity
• Interactions between language and other cognitive systems (most notably, attention, memory and sensorimotor ones), and between neurolinguistic representations (incl. syntax and pragmatics)
• Formation of neurolinguistic memory traces in language learning
• Their decay and reconfiguration with ageing and breakdown in neurological deficits, such as Parkinson's disease, aphasia, psychosis, consciousness disorders
• Furthermore, we are developing neuroscience-based methods for assessing linguistic abilities in various communication impairments.

Our theoretical approach conceptualises linguistic representations as distributed cortical circuits formed via neurobiological associative-learning mechanisms. They encompass a network of brain areas and activate rapidly, automatically and in parallel, enabling fast processing of all incoming information. We continue to specify this model by scrutinising the time course and neural substrates of neurolinguistic activations through the temporally-precise methods of MEG/EEG in combination with other imaging (MRI, DKI), brain stimulation (tDCS, TMS), behavioural and computational tools, capturing the real-time dynamics of linguistic processes.

Our techniques employ unparalleled fine-grain scrutiny of brain activations and are unique in precision-matching stimuli for multiple factors, strictly controlling their acoustic make-up, psycholinguistic properties, word recognition points etc, and in ruling out the influence of tasks and experimental strategies by explicitly controlling attention and using non-attend designs.

Teaching a variety of courses at graduate and postgraduate level (e.g., Neuroscience, Neurobiology of Language, Academic Writing). Engaged in tuition in Neuroscience programme at SDC University.

My reseearch work involves a vast international network and includes collaborators at various deparments of Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital, as well as multiple research links with research institutions worldwide, e.g., University of Cambridge (UK), Northumbria University (UK), University of Potsdam (Germany), École normale supérieure (Paris, France), Helsinki University (Finland), Goldsmith University (London, UK), New York University (USA), Addrenbrookes Hospital (UK), University of Melbourne (Australia), UCL (London, UK), Aalto University (Finland), Lund University (Sweden), Free University – Berlin (Germany), Charite Medical University (Berlin, Germany), CNRS (Lyon, France), Glasgow University (UK),  University of Messina (Italy) and many others.

At Aarhus University, I direct the MEG/EEG/TMS facility - the only one of the kind in Denmark. This facility is located at the Aarhus University Hospital  and hosts a comprehensive infrastructure for non-invasive neurophysiological investigations of the human brain, used by both researchers and clinicians. I also lead my own research group (NeuroDynamics of Human Communication - NeDComm Lab) whose research is focussed on neurobiology of speech and language, in both health and disease. In addition, I contribute to the overall administration and coordination of activities at CFIN and of course to teaching and supervision (at graduate and undergraduate levels) at the AU Health faculty.
