Profile

Jens Christian H. Sørensen (JCHS) is Professoral Chair at the Department of Neurosurgery and Chairman of Danish Neuroscience Centre at Aarhus University Hospital.

The Department of Neurosurgery at AUH is one of the leading neurosurgical departments in Scandinavia. At the department JCHS active in neurosurgical patient treatment, clinical and scientific leadership. In research JCHS work with techniques in neurobiology, neurosurgery and neuroimaging, and his experience spans from molecular and cellular neurobiology, over neuroanatomy to neuromodulation through deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, therapeutic and stem cell transplantation, trophic factor infusion systems as well as the recent introduction of MR guided Focused Ultrasound for noninvasive stereotaxic treatment of severe essential tremor. Early in his research career, he transplanted fetal rat brain tissue to ischemic and traumatic lesions in newborn and adult rats, and used neuronal tracing, electrophysiology as well as behavior, to elucidate the underlying neuroplastic mechanisms of brain repair. Later he focused his research on translating the mechanisms of brain repair to patient treatments by developing large animal models of neurologic diseases, using the minipig with a large degree of homology to the human brain and sufficiently large for the use of human sized neuromodulation devices, new drugs and stem cells. As PI, he has headed the development of DBS directional lead electrodes and neuromodulatory devices and trialing new stem cells and neuronal precursors for Parkinson. Lately he has developed the new techniques for translating medical imaging voxels to histology and spatial transcriptomics stroke.
