Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) holds the unique potential of non-invasively providing a window to the cellular microstructure and thereby improve the diagnoses and understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. This PhD study represents one more step towards realizing this potential. In particular, Jonas L. Olesen studied the functional behavior of the dMRI signal in experimental regimes made feasible by high field pre-clinical scanners. Thereby, it is made possible to disentangle the signal contributions from multiple microstructural sources providing insight, for instance, into the diffusion properties of neurites. The results further the understanding of microstructural modeling of the dMRI signal from neural tissue, especially in gray matter, which constitutes a new frontier in the field.

The PhD study was completed at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
