Perceiving motion is an unconscious, natural phenomenon, carried out by your visual system, and that helps us navigate our environment. Classic descriptions of the phenomenon are heavily focused on the involvement of specific brain regions, overlooking the contribution of the retina. Is the human retina able to process any form of motion? What operations are at play in the retina and the brain when exposed to a moving element in a visual scene? Furthermore, visual cortical dysfunctions and retinal impairments are more frequently reported in various clinical populations, and especially in Parkinson’s disease. What are the specific anatomical, functional and biological damages found in Parkinson’s disease patients? Could retinal examination in early stages of the neurodegenerative disease help stratify patients and provide better long term care? These are the different aspects this PhD dissertation offers to reflect on. This project was carried out by Jordan Nicolas Alves, who is defending his dissertation on 13 July 2022.
The defence is public and takes place on 13 July 2022 at 14.00 in Samfundsmedicinsk Auditorium, Aarhus University, Bartholins Allé, Aarhus.
