The PhD thesis focuses on investigating the use of phage display of recombinant antibodies for the discovery of novel pericyte biomarkers. Pericytes are a vital component of microvessels with important functions in vascular development, stabilization, and remodelling. Since reduced capillary pericyte-coverage and pericyte-disfunction play a role in various neurodegenerative disorders, the development of relevant pericyte biomarkers should help understand the contribution of pericytes to these and other pathological conditions.
The work was divided into two principal parts: the generation of a domain antibody library for phage display and the development of novel selection method to target antigens present on the pericyte cell membrane. The project has contributed to the generation of four individual manuscripts of which the PhD student is the first-author on two.
